Company’s English Program is Intense  (By LEE COLEMAN - The Daily Gasette - SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK)

Saratoga Springs – Felix Ureta, a 23-year-old tennis professional from South America, wants to get a master’s degree in business administration and start a business in the United States. The major obstacle in his way: He knew just a little bit of English three months ago. This is when English Connection of Saratoga Springs came to his aid. Founded seven years ago by Joanne Kubricky, English Connection offers Intensive English Language Program for people who want to increase their level of English proficiency and need to learn the language quickly. “I think my English is getting better every day,” Ureta said. Ureta is a native of Santiago, Chile, where his family owns a large printing firm. He played on the international junior professional tennis circuit in recent years and earned his business administration degree at Finis Terrae University in Santiago in 1997. “I like this kind of learning, four hours of class each day and speaking English 24-hours a day,” he said. Kubricky said part of the English Connection program is to place foreign students with a host family so he or she can speak the language on a daily basis.

The company, with offices at 480 Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs, also makes sure its students are fully exposed to the American culture. The students are taken on day trips throughout the region and encouraged to interact with the English-speaking “natives”. Ureta said he enjoys going to the Saratoga Race Course, where he had his picture taken recently with award-winning jockey Jose Adeon Santos of Concepcion, Chile. “He’s having a great time,” Kubricky said about Ureta. “He’s studying hard and playing hard,” she said. Ureta and Kubricky met earlier this year in Athens when they were both on a European cruise. This is when Ureta became interested in English Connection.

English Connection continues to expand both domestically as well as internationally. The firm has an office at several colleges and universities is planning to open an office in Rome, Italy, sometime in November. “We’ve had students from 78 different countries worldwide,” Kubricky said. “We get to meet all kinds of students,” she said. Most of the students are 18 or older. English Connection has worked with large corporations as well as individuals using a variety of individualized language packages. For example, Ball Corp., with a metal container plant in Saratoga Springs, brought in a number of engineers from a Ball plant in Brazil to learn English. Other clients include State Farm Insurance, World Bank, universities, and television and airline companies. The language learning packages can run from a few hundred dollars to corporate packages as high as $8,000 for one person for one month of intensive English instruction. The company has a staff of 15-35 full and part-time instructors plus a clerical team as well as other staff. Ureta plans to spend another month in Saratoga Springs and then seek his MBA in the United States in the future.
