Group from Former Soviet Union Spends Month in Spa City 9/11/1999 (By TIKA SHUTTLEWORTH - The Saratogian - SARATOGA SPRINGS) Students from Uzbekistan visit Saratoga Springs
Highlights: By TIKA SHUTTLEWORTH The Saratogian SARATOGA SPRINGS
Students from Uzbekistan, a country that gained its independence after the fall of the Soviet Union, are getting a taste of Saratoga Springs this month through English Connection, the international language school.
On Friday, however, some of the 13 students cringed when they braved a taste of the salty water at the springs in Congress Park.
They are fascinated with many other aspects of life in the United States, including lightning bugs, which they had never seen in their native country.
The group arrived from the capital of Tashkent on June 27 and will be departing July 25. They range in age from 13 to 49, and only one female, Svetlana Zavrazhnova, made the trip.
Zavrazhnova, who is married, explained that traditions in her country do not allow for the freedoms women have here.
"I am from Muslim country and the men maybe don't their daughters and sisters to travel alone”, she said.
Muhammad Yusuf Teshabaev, an international salesman, is taking part in the nearly month-long cultural immersion program with his son, Muhammad Yunus. Uzbekistan gained independence eight years ago. The elder Teshabaev says the 2,000-year-old capital is thriving now, with freedom of religion, new buildings being constructed and tourists pouring in.
The students stay with host families while they are here.
Diana Bergeson, of Saratoga Springs, had placed a classified ad looking for roommates and ended up hosting the Teshabaevs and another young student.
Bergeson said the experience has introduced her to Uzbekistani music and food,
with Muhammad Yusuf cooking native dishes nearly every night.
One of her favorite new dishes is palov, made of rice, beef, oil, butter and red peppers.
The students are going on several excursions including New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Florida. They have also visited the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, National Museum of Racing, and National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs so far. 480 Broadway P.O.
